The workshop which was held at the Mallam Adamu Bello Auditorium of the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN), Abuja on the 22nd of May, 2017 was organized by the Information Resource Centre (IRC), USA Embassy Abuja. The program commenced by 11am prompt and was chaired by Dr. Celestine Ikuenobe, Director Knowledge Management while the Ag. Executive Secretary, Prof. A.A. Voh was the Guest of Honor.
The Ag. Executive Secretary, Prof. A.A. Voh in his opening remarks thanked the IRC for accepting to come and hold the workshop in ARCN and for ARCN staff comprising of ARCN secretariat staff, Agricultural Research Institutes staff and Federal Colleges of Agriculture staff. He then enjoined all the Participants to ensure that they made maximum use of all opportunities they were bound to be exposed to during the workshop. He also thanked all Participants for finding time to attend while wishing all present peaceful deliberations.
The Chairman, Dr. Celestine Ikuenobe after a short speech and felicitations invited the Director IRC, Sagir M. Ahmed to commence his presentation. The Director IRC made a presentation on Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) during which he made the Participants to: Understand the what MOOCs is all about, know MOOCs providers, learn how to effectively access MOOCs to meet their personal goals and gain basic insights for making headway with eLearning.
The next presentation was made by Mrs. Meg. Ameh, Information Resource Centre Assistant at IRC. Her presentation was on Access to E-Library USA. In her presentation, she informed Participants that eLibraryUSA is an online library that gives members of IRC access to free collection of searchable databases comprising of Books (full-text of literature), Essays, Encyclopedias (Adults and Children), Reports, Periodicals articles, Documentary films and News articles. She also mentioned that some of their major providers were Jstor, Gale Cengage Learning, Encyclopedia Britannica and CQ Press amongst others and that these materials were not actually free but had been paid for by the US government and made available free. Access to eLibraryUSA is strictly by IRC’s Membership and for FREE IRC membership one is required fill the online form at http://tinyurl.com/ircregistration , Print the form before submitting it online, then attach two (2) passport size photographs to the hard copy and submit at the IRC office for further processing of one’s ID card before membership can be confirmed. One will then be given a password with which to login to http://elibraryusa.state.gov/ and enjoy the available massive resources. She concluded by inviting all Participants to avail themselves of this free IRC membership opportunity without delay.
Questions were taken at the end of each presentation and the workshop came to a close at about 2:15pm with a vote of thanks by the Chairperson Seminar Committee, Dr. Nnemeka E. Ihegwuagu and closing prayers.
